We asked our 2026 Summer Law Clerks, Mara Abernethy and Alyssa Graff, to share what attracted them to the firm and how their experiences have guided their professional development.

Mara S. Abernethy

“After working as a judicial assistant and legal intern in state and federal courts, as well as at the Washington Attorney General’s Office, I knew the next step in my legal education was to gain experience in litigation. I was drawn to Cosgrave by its many practice areas, collegial environment, and history of successful advocacy.”

Mara is a rising 3L at the University of Oregon School of Law. She completed her undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University, where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Law, and played Division I volleyball. In law school, she has externed in the U.S. District of Oregon, served as an Articles Editor on the Oregon Law Review, worked as a Legal Research and Writing Tutor, and completed an environmental law fellowship.

Alyssa L. Graff

“Through my experiences at Lewis & Clark and the Oregon Department of Justice, I have seen the impact that an attorney can make, learned the value of a challenge, and felt the satisfaction that comes from hard work paying off. I am eager to further develop my legal advocacy skills at a firm that truly prioritizes mentorship and encourages involvement.”

Alyssa is a rising 3L at Lewis & Clark Law School. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from Brigham Young University. She serves as an Article Editor of the Lewis & Clark Law Review and worked as a Law Clerk at the Oregon Department of Justice, Consumer Protection Section, where she received the Excellence in Justice award. Before law school, Alyssa worked as a litigation paralegal in Encinitas, California.
